After reading some posts where Thea users talked about the future functions they would like to see in Thea, I thought it would be more practical to have all this wishes, ideas gathered in this topic.
This way, Thea team could have a global view of community's wishes.
I know there is already on the main page of the site a poll but the radio buttons choices limit us.

IMHO thats a good idea.....there is nothing better to make customers happy than to listen to their wishes

Something that is truly a minor issue, but perhaps it could be changed. When doing repeat renders with small changes for testing purposes I have the "Start Render" box pop up. I know there's an option to "Don't Ask Again", but I like the pop up reminder of what my output is so I can change it right away to the desired format if I've forgotten to do so previously. Maybe it's just me, but I've clicked the render button, hit enter and walked away forgetting to click the check. Don't know why.

My suggestion: In addition to clicking the check mark as a method of initiating the render, have the [ENTER] keyboard key work as well. Click Render, hit enter, done.

I want atmospheres

Like Vue, skies that we can edit, clouds, etc.

+1

Also, Blender has an interesting function called fly mode :

more hotkeys and a reference map ... at least for the navigation ... at least ctrl+z/ctrl+y for undo/redo!!!!

It would be great if you could add the possibility to lock aspect ratio when setting the render resolution so that we only have to change one value and the other is automaticly calculated.

It would also be useful to have a x2 and /2 button for resolution (like there is in the SketchUp plugin).

On a similar note, it would be good if you could change the ratio by dragging the edges of the camera bounding box (a bit like grabbing the edges of Photoshops transform bounding box).

For some reason I always struggle when it comes to framing scenes.

I totaly agree!

I also miss the possibility to type the real World size for a texture, and to freely move the background map to fit the render!

Great suggestion!

I would like the ground plane to not only be a shadow catcher, but also a reflection catcher, so I could add a reflection to this test render below when rendering with an HDRI:

If there is no particular texture that is needed from HDR, then I would simply use a ground plate with a suitable material (no shadow-only).
At the moment there is no option for "reflection catcher", but we may see one later, most likely combined to render channels.

Thanks for the tip. But, IMO, Thea Render competes directly with Bunkspeed HyperShot (Shot) and KeyShot, and both of those apps offer reflection catching on HDRI generated ground planes. It makes setting up and rendering a compelling scene a snap, which is an extremely important feature for their users. Just look at their websites and you'll see it's used in just about all the product renders.

If Thea Render offered such a feature, I suspect many who use those two programs may consider switching, as Thea has more features, lower price, and a better renderer. This IS important.

Sure we understand the importance of it. It's more a matter of implementation, having both biased and unbiased engines will make these kind of features much more complex to implement.

Thanks for listening! I'm still finding my way around your superb program. It would be great to have some tutorials showing some specific things, like how to make a scene with atmospherics (haze and fog), or how to apply a decal to an object.

I understand the extreme technical nature of the program, but many settings are very difficult to comprehend their meaning. Simple concepts like adding decals, or creating a dust cloud, seem difficult to execute, if not impossible. I think an easy to use "Getting Started" type of guide would certainly be great to have. Still, the product is only beta and I'm sure everyone is working as hard as possible. I suspect these things will come later.

Ability to assign linking to layers or single materials for things like bump, displacement and clipping. Currently, if clipping happens it happens to all layers. I'd like to be able to create a material, perhaps consisting of a few layers, then apply that layer as clipping to a specific layer on another material without it affecting the remaining layers.

Here are some more suggestions:

1. Have a menu item somewhere which can toggle 4 view and Full screen mode
2. Try to give examples of what a setting actually does, instead of reference a Wikipedia entry on Absorption. I'm not being difficult, but I'm actually trying to make your product appeal to more than just techy engineer types.
3. Don't have ANY keyboard shortcuts without an accompanying menu item or button.
4. Do not let fields have cursor focus when they should be disabled.
5. The IR should use the same aspect ratio as what the render frame is set at.
6. There should be support for multiple and custom aspect ratios-- esp 16:9
7. Add support for adding decals on a surface using Planar mapping (not UV)

Can you give a example of such material that requires layer based clip-mapping? Perhaps gabion baskets, but for that I think one gets better result with separate meshes, one for the basket and one for rocks. Maybe this is more a workflow issue...
