Dear friends,

in the previous announcement, we "revealed" the reason delaying the release 1.2. It was basically due to going back and investing a lot of time in research for improving the Adaptive BSD. This has been quite crucial for us, since Thea has the idiom of supporting multiple, different kind, render engines and every engine has to be at the very top on its own. So here, we are giving more details about the new technique that we call "Field Mapping". We hope you like it. :)

Field Mapping - A New Revolutionary Approach

Field mapping is a new proprietary technique that evaluates consistently the lighting than cannot be reached easily by Final Gathering. It is something that we invested most of the time in the passed months and have brought it from a simple idea to life. Combined with an improved, adaptive, Final Gathering, the whole evaluation becomes robust even for the most difficult cases.

We can showcase Field Mapping with the scene below; it is a relatively simple scene for testing, yet difficult due to the covered area emitter. The result with traditional Final Fathering even when coupled with Photon Mapping is quite noisy, resulting in blotches in the final render. With Field Mapping evaluation becomes easy and it brings the expected high quality result without any troubles. If you want to test the scene with another renderer, here it is in OBJ/FBX format.

Presets that Work

Due to the new robust Adaptive BSD engine, we have the luxury now to create presets that work in almost all cases, without any further tweaking from the user. This way, the time to tune the biased engine is minimized and new users can get nice results right from the beginning.

No More Thick Walls

The traditional problem of light and shadow leaks no longer exists. Field Mapping makes an accurate evaluation and leaks, that are so common with Photon Mapping, are now gone.

The next question that probably comes to mind, is what about speed. Is it now faster than before? For small, simple scenes, the new implementation may be somewhat slower. But for real-work scenes the new robust Adaptive BSD is similar (or even faster) than the previous one.

Bump and Global Illumination

The bump and normal mapping under global illumination are also dramatically improved. The look is quite different now, quite more realistic, when bumped surfaces are indirectly lit. And this without any speed drop.

Shadow Catcher

Shadow catcher materials also work now with Adaptive BSD and are very fast!

Walkthrough Animation

On top of the above, we have made an implementation very specific to walkthrough animations. Now, the Adaptive BSD will consider all the frames at once, so as to remove any floating "blotchy" patterns. Below you can see a sample animation.[/youtube]

Nice news, I'm more on unbiased with Thea because of quality results/setting time ! Hope this will reconciliate me with Biased renders ! Thanks Giannis for infos ! Can't wait to put my hands on next revision...

I was already excited about the new release, but now I really, really, really can't wait to get my hands on it.

You guys seem to have addressed all the niggles associated with BSD. Congratulations and thanks for all the hard work

Congratulations for transport to Thea to new level !!
The new feature "Walkthrough Animation" it's very interesting for me, in my new project I need create this kind of animation.
