I've really been enjoying using Thea render so far, especially the included 3d tree models, but one thing that was missing for me was more descriptive proxies within Sketchup, like the ones included with the sample AXYZ models. While something in 3d would be nice ideally, I went for the next best and simplest option which was simply to render out 2d billboards which I brought into Sketchup as images. The result is a low poly but detailed preview of how the final tree will render which makes precision placement within Sketchup much more intuitive. In addition, I've added a couple points on the trees to make moving and rotating them less cumbersome once they've already been placed (a 0,0,0 point for snapping to terrain etc. and an invisible horizontal plan around the center of the tree to allow for rotation around the blue axis.) Unlike other similar 2d trees in Sketchup that tend to be 'face-me' components, these were set up statically so that the profiles perfectly match the corresponding 3d instance no matter how they're rotated. And in case you want to turn them off within Sketchup, I've put the images on their own layer, 'Tree Billboards' which can be turned off, leaving a simple vertical line visible for each tree.

Below are links to where you can download each of the model packs. You'll need to place them in your Thea models folder along with the corresponding Thea models and textures. The next time you load them into Sketchup, voila, the component will then replace the default xray box as a proxy.

Hopefully someone else can make use if these. I'm betting I'm not the first one to have done this.

Glad to help :) I like the plan view in yours JQL - didn't think to add that.

I've also done this for a few of the xfrog free plants, so I can post those as well.

for placing thats also comes in handy. Ive made also planview renders which i put in separate layer, its more work but can help with quick SU renders. Its more work

The idea for plan views is for using in architectural plans in my projects. That way I can have practical elevations and plans and use those proxies for much more than rendering purposes. This kind of proxies take a lot of time to create but, on complex projects, they pay off.

Can you please explain the full process of making these? How do you get them to show up with the 3D proxies from Thea?
