Q. I have bought a license from your e-shop but I still haven't received any serial codes. Why is that happening?
A. After having completing your order of one or more Thea Render products from our e-shop, the first step that you need to do is to assure that your order was successfully achieved and confirmed. If you haven’t received a confirmation from your PayPal account, that a transaction was made, it is possible that there is a problem with your account or your credit card and so the purchase procedure was aborted during the process. If you have received a confirmation of your payment, an email that confirms your order will be also sent to you. Please give us some time (usually some hours, with maximum 1-2 days in worst cases) to send you the serial numbers, as the whole procedure is made manually and so some delays may be expected. We thank you in advance for your patience and your understanding over this matter.
Q. I have downloaded Thea Studio and bought the license. How do I activate my program?
A. As long as you have downloaded the program and have received the serial numbers, you are ready to start the activation procedure. There is a detailed guide for this procedure at the first pages of Thea Manual. You can open Thea Studio and go at: Help>Open>User Manual (pdf). There, you will find detailed instructions for the steps you need to follow along with images to help you through.
Here are some basic steps you need to follow for the activation: Open Thea Studio and from the Help Menu, open the License Form window. Add there your email address (it will be used to send you the activation code, so be sure it is valid and spelled correctly), your full name and the serial number you received after buying the program. Add also the serials for any plugins you may have bought, at the Plugins tab. Then, request the activation code. After that, an email will come to you with the activation code. Copy this activation code and paste it at the activation code cell of the License Form window. Press OK button and then restart Thea Render to apply these changes and activation is now completed.

Q. I requested an activation code as described, but I don't get any e-mail.
A. Normally, you should first run the test mail before requesting an activation code to ensure that your e-mail is valid and entered correctly. Make sure that the e-mail can arrive to your e-mail account without being blocked by spam filters. If that's the case, you might be behind a proxy (where it's not possible for Thea to work around) or typing your e-mail wrongly. Please contact us in case you are experiencing any troubles (license[at]thearender[dot]com).
Q. I am behind a proxy, how can I activate Thea license?
A. The application cannot handle currently activation if you are behind a proxy, so you will have to do the activation manually by filling your license data and exporting the license file. To do this, you need to go at Misc tab of the License Form window and press the Export Key button. You can then send the exported text file as an attachment to us (license[at]thearender[dot]com) to send you back an activation license file. Then just import the License file via the License Form window, at Misc. Restart Thea Studio to apply these changes. Note that dealing with proxies will be added in a later application revision.
Q. I enter the serial number but Thea replies that it is not valid.
A. In order to be sure that you insert the serial number correctly, the best thing to do is to copy-paste the serial number from the e-mail you received to the License Form window. Make sure that you enter the serial exactly as it was sent without including any spaces before or after.
Q. When I received the pdf with my license I saw several serial numbers, which one should I use each time?
A. In case of purchasing a standard license, apart for the Studio license you also get 2 node licenses that help you set up network rendering. By using the first serial number, you make Thea run in normal (Studio) mode while by using the node licenses, Thea will run in Client mode after restarting it. So, in case you want to change between Studio and Client modes, you need to use the Clear License button and then re-enter the corresponding serials to make Thea run in the desired mode.
Q. I tried reactivating a license but I get a message box saying that there is an e-mail mismatch. What should I do?
A. You should make sure that both your name and e-mail address given in the License Form window, match exactly the literals you entered in your first activation. These literals appear in the license form of a correctly licensed application, if you have forgotten them, you will need to contact us.
Q. I want to migrate my license from one computer to another. What should I do? Do I have to buy the product again if my new OS is different?
A. If you want to permanently remove your license from one machine, you can use the Clear License button at the Misc Tab of the License Form window. Then, at your new computer, you need to do activation as you did the first time you activated the program. Remember though, that you will need to provide again your serial number, your user name (which is case sensitive) and your email address as entered the first time and request a new activation code.
In case that you switch from PC to Mac or Linux or vice versa, all you have to do is to download the corresponding installation file from Thea Render Download page, install it and use the serial key you firstly received and activate it, with no need to re-purchase any license of the program.
Q. Where should I add my plugin serial numbers in order to activate them, in Thea Studio or in the corresponding programs?
A. Plugin license serials, just as the Studio serials, need to be entered in Thea Studio, at the Plugins tab of the License Form window. You can locate the corresponding window by going to Help>License Form>Plugins and then copy your serial number from the pdf you received during your buy to the corresponding application slot. Then press OK button and restart both the Studio and your modeling application to apply the changes.
Q. I see that there are several types of licenses to buy at the e-shop. What each one includes and what are their main differences?
A. There are currently several types of licenses. Here is e brief explanation for each one of them. More information on each product can be found at our e-shop page.
- Academic or Promotional version: with this single license (Studio Application), a single copy of the software may be installed and used by one person, on one machine. If you wish to install the software or use it concurrently on additional machines you must purchase additional licenses.
- Standard license (Studio Application + 2 Nodes): in this case a single copy of the software may be installed and used by you, on up to three machines, provided that the application is not used or executed simultaneously. If you wish to install the software or use it concurrently on additional machines you must purchase additional licenses. You also receive 2 node licenses that make it possible for you to perform network rendering. You can find some instructions on how to do that at Render Farm page.
- Floating licenses allow unlimited installations and can be used for dynamic license allocation in a multiple-user environment.
- Node license: with a node license you can make Thea run on Client mode. In this case, a single copy of the software may be installed and used by you, on one machine. If you wish to install the software on additional machines you must purchase additional node licenses.
- Plugin license: In this case, a single copy of the software may be installed and used by you, on up to two three machines, provided that the application is not used or executed simultaneously on any machines. If you wish to install the software or use it concurrently on additional machines you must purchase additional licenses. Note that in order to activate a plugin, you need prior to buy a Studio License.

Q. Are any library materials included in Thea Studio? How can I access the Libraries I see at the Resources webpage?
A. The main materials for the program are included in all versions, even in the demo ones. At Resources area, you can see more material and model libraries, which are available only to licensed users, who can download them for free from the corresponding forum thread (Licensed Users Club).
Note: in case you are also a licensed user but you don’t have access to this thread yet, contact us by providing your forum name and your order ID to make you member of the Licensed Users Club as well.
Q. I see that there are some links in the forum that can be accessed only by licensed users. I have a license as well, so how can I also gain access to these threads?
A. In order to join the "Licensed Users Club", first of all you have to register at our forum. In the case that you have joined the forum and then order the product (by submitting during buying process your forum nickname) the change at your status is made most times by administrators. But more usually, users register at forum after buying the product. So, all you have to do is to send us an email at with your forum username, your full name and your order id number, and we will take care of the details. You will then see above your forum profile image a rank icon saying "Licensed User" and from now on you will have access to the needed resources and libraries.
Q. Thea Studio was running licensed but after some point it went again in Demo mode, what happened?
A. Thea licensing system is tied to your OS/Network settings. This means that if there are any changes (an upgrade for example) to your OS or a network change, Thea may need to be reactivated. A common case here is that you enabled or disabled a wireless card. Reactivation must take place for Thea to record the new settings into a new license file. The old license file is still kept, so you do not have to repeat this procedure if you revert to your previous network settings.
Q. I downloaded and installed a new revision but Thea went in demo mode, what should I do?
A. This can happen only in Linux and MacOSX where the licenses are stored inside the application bundle currently. So, these license files should be copied from your previous revision to the one (manually or by exporting/importing license). Please, check our "Installing a new revision" thread, at the forum.
Q. Are there any restrictions for the academic license? What documents I need to submit if I want to buy one? Can I upgrade later to a standard license?
A. The academic licenses have all of the functionality you can find at the commercial licenses, concerning technical characteristics and options available, with the single difference that you get a single license, without any nodes. This means you can use the license to only one machine. For getting an academic license we will need from you two things: in case you are a student a scanned copy of your student/faculty id and the use of a valid university e-mail address. If you are a teacher a scanned copy of faculty id along with a university e-mail address are required. In case you want to upgrade from academic to the full version you can contact us for arranging a license upgrade fee based on the current products and prices.
Q. What are the limitations of the demo version that I can download free of charge? Is it trial for a certain time period or it has some limitations instead?
A. Because learning and experiment with a render program may needs some time, there is no strict limitation to the time that a user can use the demo version. Demo version has full functionality as the Studio, although rendered images have watermarks and there is a limitation on the higher resolution you can use (1280x720). There is also no access to the new material and model libraries that only licensed users have.
Q. What files are associated with Thea Render?
A. Thea can open several types of files, such as: *.scn.thea, *.pack.thea, *.lib.thea, *.ipt.thea, *.img.thea, *.xml, *.tzx, *.kzx, *.kst, *.obj, *.3ds, *.sia. Of course, image format types are also supported for inserting bitmaps at the Texture Lab.
Q. I see that I can save my scene as an *.xml file. Can I also open it in other applications?
A. In general, xml file is just an information container file that follows certain principles. It's not a general file format that is readable by every application that uses xml. The application must have support for the schema used in the specific xml in order to open it.
Q. I am experiencing some problems with Thea at Ubuntu. Is there a common problem with it?
A. If you have some troubles in starting Thea Studio in Ubuntu, you might need a dependency called "libglitz", which should be easy to find if you search for it in synaptic package manager.
Q. From time to time there are several updates of the program. Do I have to pay for these to get them? How do I install them? Is an update notification possible?
A. New updates are free to download for all users and you can download them from the Download page. In addition to this, you don't have to uninstall anything from your previous version, just install the new package on top of the existing one and changes will be applied automatically. In case you want to get informed for the new updates, you can use the RSS feed of Thea Render News or subscribe at our newsletter at the corresponding subscription form at Thea homepage .
Q. Are there any example scenes in the program to start with?
A. Thea Studio comes along with some example scenes, which will help you to see some material settings, lighting and render options. You can open these example scenes from inside the program at: File>Scenes>Examples and choose the scene you want. You can also find some larger and more complex scenes at our corresponding Studio Scenes webpage.
